Back pain
Back Pain
Back Pain is the most common cause of pain and disability in the UK population and accounts for a significant effect on one’s well being and quality of life.
About 8 out of 10 adults will suffer from one or more episodes of back pain at least once in their lives. It is sometimes referred to as a back strain or lumbago.
There are over 9 million people living with long term back pain in the UK alone and it is on of the most common reasons for time off work and seeking medical advice.
It often results from problems with one or more structures in the back:
- Ligaments
- Muscles
- Spinal Cord/Nerves/Discs
- Vertebral Column (The bony structure of the spine)
- Pelvic/abdominal organs which refer pain to the back
Acute back pain refers to pain which has usually been present for a few days or weeks. This may occur following a sudden movement or after physical exertion. The pain may not be noticeable straight away but may be more severe after a few days or the morning after.
With an acute episode of back pain, actual structural damage is still rare and most cases of back pain get better within a few weeks with rest and pain relief measures.
The problem here occurs where the pain is still present after a few days or weeks and persists after taking painkillers, rest or
physical therapy.

Chronic back pain can be a profoundly debilitating problem that can make everything you do more difficult. Back pain can take many forms, from a muscle aching to a shooting, burning or stabbing sensation. In addition, the pain may radiate down your leg or worsen with bending, twisting, lifting, standing or walking. But you do not have to live with it, at MyMSK Clinic we are here to help provide pain relief for back pain. There are a number of treatments for back pain. You may be able to manage a mild case with anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen, and many people also find that massage and other painkillers can be helpful.
Spinal Injections for Back Pain Relief
When the pain persists, despite physical therapy and painkillers, we are able to provide a range of therapies including Spinal Injections for Back Pain Relief.
These therapies include a cortisone injection in the facet joints or a Caudal Epidural. We also perform a form of nerve root block under ultrasound guidance as well as injections in the Sacroiliac joints.
Cortisone injection is an anti inflammatory medication and a very effective painkiller. A Cortisone injection is hugely effective for back pain when caused by disc prolapse, bulging discs or Sciatica.
The anti inflammatory medicine in the cortisone is delivered straight to the degenerative joint (in the case of facet joint pain) in the back, or around the nerve root causing the pain. Often this works very well and gives the patient their quality of life back.
We also provide injections of PRP into the facet joints to aid in regeneration of joints and to slow down Spondylosis/Arthritis.
We also offer Prolotherapy injection in the Spine which has shown good evidence for relieving back pain.
We are established in the North West for several years with two locations, Burnley and Manchester.
You do not need to just put up with chronic pain anymore. Come and talk to us at MyMSK Clinic. Back pain really can be a thing of the past and your life can be relatively pain free.
