Hyaluronic Acid Injection - Manchester & Burnley

What are Hyaluronic acid injections?

Hyaluronic Acid injections are used in Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis when other methods to control the pain have not worked.

Hyaluronic acid is a major structural component of both joint and cartilage. It is also found in the fluid that lubricates the joints known as Synovial fluid. As we age, the production of hyaluronic acid made by the body decreases. This leads to joint degeneration and Arthritis.

Hyaluronic Acid is now artificially engineered and injected into these joints. It is therefore an ideal treatment when the joint is affected by conditions such as Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis results in a loss of healthy Synovial fluid within the joint.

The procedure of injection of Hyaluronic acid into joints affected by Osteoarthritis is called Viscosupplementation.

There are many commercial grades of Hyaluronic acid on the market. As technology has progressed, we now have preparations that have been engineered to last longer in the joint than before.

Here at MyMSK Clinic We replace this loss of healthy fluid using an Ostenil Injection.

An Ostenil Injection can be administered in 2 ways. Ostenil itself can be injected repeatedly 4-6 weeks part for a series of 3 injections.

The alternative is Ostenil Plus injections which contain a preservative called Mannitol. This is a single injection which can be ‘topped up’ when required.

Hyaluronic Injection Schedule

3 injections done 4-6 weeks apart

Do Hyaluronic Acid injections work straightaway?

Research has shown it takes 4-8 weeks to really start showing its efficacy. Cortisone is more effective for pain in the first 4 weeks but by 8 weeks Hyaluronic injection provides longer lasting pain relief in addition to being better for the joint overall

How Long does a Course of Hyaluronic Acid last?

We aim to try and make a course of injections last from 6-12 months. Because there is no steroid in these a patient can have top up when they feel it is necessary

Side Effects

Very occasionally a short term flare up of inflammation which subsides and overall very well tolerated.

Procedure Knee Injection

The procedure for this injection is as follows:

The patient lies on the couch and the knee has a pad placed under it

The area to be injected is located using an ultrasound scanning machine with gel applied

The area to be injected is marked

The area to be injected is then cleaned with a sterile anti septic solution to reduce the risk of infection following the injection

A Local Anaesthetic is administered to the area to numb the area and make the injection relatively comfortable and as pain free as possible

The Hyaluronic Acid is injected with the assistance of the ultrasound machine for an accurate injection to give it the best chance of working

A plaster is applied

Following the injection the patient is given a knee exercise sheet to help with rehab to strengthen the muscles around the joint which may have weakened.

The injection requires an experienced medical professional to administer it. This makes the procedure safer and more effective

Can I Drive Afterwards?

It is advised to rest for 12-24 hours after having this injection
